Moving between Biel/Bienne and Neuchâtel, tax, insurance and pensions

Changing canton affects your tax, your health insurance and sometimes your pension. Here is what needs sorting out, and in what order.

Biel/Bienne and Neuchâtel are only a few minutes apart by train, but they are in two different cantons. Moving from one to the other changes several things at once, and some of them have to be dealt with by specific dates.

Your tax follows your residence on 31 December

As a general rule, the canton where you are resident at the end of the year taxes you for the whole year. A move in the autumn therefore shifts the entire tax year to the new canton. It is worth comparing the two situations before setting the date, especially if you are planning a capital withdrawal or a property sale in the same year.

Health insurance to adjust

Your premium depends on your premium region. Tell your health insurer your new address and the premium will be adjusted to your new place of residence. It is also the right moment to review your deductible, your model and your supplementary cover.

Insurance and pensions to review

Your household contents and personal liability insurer needs to know your new address, and the insured value of your belongings should be checked. If you also change employer, your pension fund assets move to the new pension fund, and it is a good opportunity to review any gaps and a possible buy-in.

  • Compare the tax impact before setting the moving date.
  • Give your new address to your health insurer and your other insurers.
  • Check the insured value of your household contents.
  • Review your pension if you change jobs.
