Three Pillar 3a mistakes that cost you dearly
Pillar 3a is the most advantageous savings tool in Switzerland. Used badly, it still lets thousands of francs slip away. Here are the traps to avoid.

Pillar 3a, the private pension savings of Switzerland's third pillar, is often presented as the obvious tax move for anyone paying tax here. And it is. Every franc you pay in reduces your taxable income, and the capital grows tax-free until retirement. But between opening an account and having a real strategy there is a world of difference, and that gap is where most of the money is lost.
1. Paying in at the last minute, or not at all
The annual 3a ceiling does not simply carry over. If you do not pay in, you generally lose that year's deduction. Since 2025, missed years can be bought back later, but only under strict conditions and only for gaps arising from 2025 onward, so it is better not to rely on it. And paying in December rather than January hands eleven months of returns to your bank instead of to you.
2. Leaving everything in an account that sleeps
A standard bank 3a account currently pays a fraction of inflation. Over thirty years, the difference between an account and a 3a invested in securities runs to tens of thousands of francs. Risk is something you manage according to your time horizon, not something you simply endure.
3. Opening only one account
At retirement, withdrawing your whole 3a in a single year pushes you up the tax progression. Spreading the capital across several accounts opened over time lets you stagger the withdrawals over several years, which noticeably reduces the tax you pay on them.
The habits that change everything
- Pay in early in the year, ideally by monthly standing order.
- Choose the right vehicle (account, securities or insurance) depending on your horizon.
- Open a new 3a account every few years so you can stagger withdrawals later.
- Review the strategy at every life stage, such as buying a home, marriage or becoming self-employed.
None of these decisions is complicated on its own. It is the combination, matched to your situation, that makes the difference. A free pension review is enough to set the framework.
